Meteorological Measurement: LUFFT Intelligent Road/Runway surface temperature Sensors and more

The lufft IRS series intelligent road surface sensors provide traffic management systems with timely information on the road surface condition and warn of critical situations developing such as reaching freezing point conditions or surface water film likely to cause aquaplaning. This information can then be transmitted to winter maintenance managers for appropriate actions to take place, or to variable message signs to warn motorists of likely hazardous surface driving conditions.

A quick summary of each sensor is given below, but if you need the full story, please request a copy of the product data sheet, either by phone (01767 692692), email or use the Contact us link, filling in the details as required. Thank you.

The LUFFT Intelligent road sensor has been designed for monitoring critical road surface or runway conditions

Key benefits :

  • Interchangeable sensor/electronics
  • Polling via RS485-interface
  • Low energy consumption (solar operation)
  • Radar procedure to measure water film

The  Lufft Intelligent Road Sensor is built into the road, flush with the surface. The two-part housing design enables the combined sensor/electronics unit to be exchanged for maintenance or calibration purposes in a matter of minutes. The following measurements are taken: - Road surface temperature - Water film level up to 4 mm - Freezing temperature for NACL (others on enquiry) - Road condition (dry/damp/wet/ice or snow/residual salt/freezing) The sensors can be addressed and therefore networked. The measurement data is digitally transmitted via RS485-interface for further processing (logger, PLC etc.).

Two models are available:.

      1. IRS31-UMB(Universal Measurement Bus)connector to connect to UMB modules, this offers open protocol communication directly to any manufacturers hardware.

      2. ARS31- UMB  Active road sensor for determination of freezing point.

Special features:

  • Replaceable sensor/electronics
  • Request over UMB protocol
  • Radar procedure for water film determination
  • Supports up to 10 ice melting materials
Description:

Passive road sensor IRS31 is flush-mounted in the road. The two part housing design allows the combined sensor/electronics unit to be removed for maintenance or calibration at any time. The following variables are recorded: - Road surface temperature - Water film height up to 4 mm - Freezing temperature for maximum 10 ice melting materials - Road condition (dry/damp/wet/ice or snow/residual salt/freezing rain) In combination with interface converter 8160.UISO, the sensor can be integrated into new and existing UMB networks. The sensors are addressable and can therefore be networked.

Active road/runway surface temperature sensor :ARS31

The active ARS31 sensor is installed flush with the road/runway surface and calculates the freezing temperature by means of active cooling and heating of the sensor surface. The freezing temperature measurement is independent of mixture. The two-section housing design allows the combined sensor/electronics unit to be removed for maintenance purposes at any time, in just a few minutes. In conjunction with interface converter 8160.UISO, the sensor can be built into new and existing UMB networks. Passive sensor IRS31 and active sensor ARS31 can be combined without difficulty, in fact this is recommended. The sensors are addressable and hence can be networked.
